چکیده

The renormalized elasticity Jheory for jsolated flexible polymers developed recently by de Gennes is extended to the case of strong elongation ( Z / R F >> 1,Z is the average end-to-end length in response to a uniform tension and R F is the excluded volume Flory radius !fa free coil). I t is shown that, in this regime, the elastic restoring force f is nonlinear in the distortion and varies as Z3/’ in three dimensions. The consequences of this behavior are discussed for: (1) the coil-stretch transition in strong shear flows and (2) elastic neutron scattering.

Simulating the Relaxation of Stretched DNA in Slitlike Confinement

Brownian dynamics simulations of bead-spring chains were used to study the relaxation of an initially stretched DNAmolecule in slitlike confinement. Taking into account excluded volume effects but neglecting hydrodynamic interactions, the simulations are able to reproduce the two relaxation times in the linear force regime that our group has experimentally studied and recently reported. The rel...

Computer simulations and scaling concepts in polymer physics

We use large-scale Monte Carlo simulations to test scaling theories for the electrostatic persis-tence length le of isolated, uniformly charged polymers with Debye-Hückel intrachain interactions in thelimit where the screening length κ−1 exceeds the intrinsic persistence length of the chains. Our simulationscover a significantly larger part of the parameter space than previous studi...

Excluded volume effects on the structure of a linear polymer under shear flow

The effect of excluded volume interactions on the structure of a polymer in shear flow is investigated by Brownian Dynamics simulations for chains with size 30 ≤ N ≤ 300. The main results concern the structure factor S(q) of chains of N=300 Kuhn segments, observed at a reduced shear rate β = γ̇τ = 3.2, where γ̇ is the bare shear rate and τ is the longest relaxation time of the chain. At low q, wh...

Static Rouse modes and related quantities: corrections to chain ideality in polymer melts.

Following the Flory ideality hypothesis intrachain and interchain excluded-volume interactions are supposed to compensate each other in dense polymer systems. Multichain effects should thus be neglected and polymer conformations may be understood from simple phantom chain models. Here we provide evidence against this phantom chain, mean-field picture. We analyze numerically and theoretically th...
